Wondering how to get started? Here are a few tips:

1. Invite your players

Invite them with either their email address or their Obsidian Portal username.

2. Edit your home page

Make a few changes to the home page and give people an idea of what your campaign is about. That will let people know you’re serious and not just playing with the system.

3. Choose a theme

If you want to set a specific mood for your campaign, we have several backgrounds to choose from. Accentuate it by creating a top banner image.

4. Create some NPCs

Characters form the core of every campaign, so take a few minutes to list out the major NPCs in your campaign.

A quick tip: The “+” icon in the top right of every section is how to add a new item, whether it’s a new character or adventure log post, or anything else.

5. Write your first Adventure Log post

The adventure log is where you list the sessions and adventures your party has been on, but for now, we suggest doing a very light “story so far” post. Just give a brief overview of what the party has done up to this point. After each future session, create a new post detailing that night’s adventures.

One final tip: Don’t stress about making your Obsidian Portal campaign look perfect. Instead, just make it work for you and your group. If everyone is having fun, then you’re using Obsidian Portal exactly as it was designed, even if your adventure log isn’t always up to date or your characters don’t all have portrait pictures.

That’s it! The rest is up to your and your players.

Last week

Giant hunting!

There was little to salvage from the burned wagon. Agnatha was certain it was the wagon we had purchased for our cooking supplies and tents and had sent out two hirelings out with on their journey to Broken Shield. There was no sign of the horse or assailants, but Tedro’s keen eyes and tracking skills were able to pick up the hoofprints of the draft horse leading off towards the southwest. The party set off hoping to find the horse and their missing goods.

Several hours later, after following the trail to the edge of the swamp and then veering south, the party found the body of one of the hire guards. It appeared that some great force had slammed him into the trunk of a fallen tree and crushed his ribs and broken his spine with great force, ending his life abruptly. The horse was not there, but Tedro’s keen eyes spotted large footprints heading east and the party continued the search after laying the hireling to rest.

The party followed the trail back across the Trade Way until it skirted around the mouth of a large cave. Seraphina crept up to the cave mouth and returned to tell the rest of the party that the cave was filled with stone statues of many different types of creatures. Everyone was curious and agreed to investigate before continuing following the large footprints. While investigating the statues, the party was attacked by two large eight-legged lizards that crawled from burrows inside the cave. Seraphina recognized these immediately as basilisks and warned everyone not to meet their gaze. Tedro created a patch of spike growth around the lizards as the rest shielded their eyes. One lizard charged Levi and only took minor damage from the spikes, the other charged towards Agnatha and Seraphina and was bleeding heavily from many cuts along its belly by the time it was close enough to make a bite attack on Agnatha. Levi made several flailing attacks wounding one badly while Seraphina touched the other and stunned it with an electric charge. Tedro thinking to remove the gaze threat by blinding them, commanded his companion owl to try and gouge the eyes of the lizard that was attacking Levi. The bird missed its attacks, narrowly missing its gaping jaws, only to be struck by its gaze and fall helplessly to the floor. Seraphina and Agnatha quickly dispatched the other basilisk as there aim was true and the blood loss from the wounds from the spikes hampered it greatly. Everyone turned their attention to the remaining basilisk and it quickly fell without any further injury to the party. Tedro’s companion owl made a miraculous recovery and avoided becoming just another statue for the collection in the cave.

Giant hunting! (part 2)

After thoroughly searching the cave and destroying the two basilisk eggs they found, the party felt this was a safe enough place to leave the mounts so they could climb the hill and continue following the trail of footprints hoping to find their draft horse and missing supplies. The path was easy to follow, not for the ease of discerning footprints, but for the clear trail of broken tree limbs leading though the woods. Several hours later the party was forced to camp for the night and though the cold made it uncomfortable it was uneventful.

The next day the search continued and the party came to a clearing with a large crude hut at the top of a small hillock. Seraphina tried to approach the hut quietly to investigate, but knocked over part of a woodpile creating a noisy racket that would have woken a drunk dwarf. A large Hill Giant threw open the front door of the hut and scooped her up it his massive hand while wielding a large wooden club in the other. Quick thinking by Levi motivated him to charge up the hill yelling loudly at the giant and banging his javelin on his shield in an attempt to distract the giant’s attention from the helpless Seraphina. This action likely saved her life as the giant tossed her to the ground and although she looked like she was battered and bruised greatly, she was still conscious and alive. Agnatha followed Levi up the hill, tossing a ball of flame at him, before they both engaged in melee with the 16 foot tall monstrosity. Tedro offered support from a safe range by sending many arrows into its chest. Eventually the giant was outmatched by the skilled coordinated tactics of the party and fell dead with a resounding thud. After tending to their wounds, the party made a quick search of the giant’s hut which revealed their draft horse had become a meal for the giant but their missing supplies were intact in a pile in the corner.

Eager to be back on their way to Broken Shield, the party hastily returned to the cave to recover their mounts. Several hours after getting back on the main Trade Way the party came upon a large wagon blocking the road. Bodies of four orcs and one robed human were spread out around the back of the wagon. The wagon also had a locked door on the back which had been broken and forced open. As they searched for survivors, the bodies of the orcs began to move. They quickly rose and shambled forward to attack. Agnatha quickly ascertained they were reanimated corpses … zombies! Levi had no trouble landing damaging blows and one was almost completly dismembered before the rest could even ready their weapons. Serveral seemingly ineffective attacks by Tedro and Seraphina followed as Agnatha channelled her diety and held forth her holy symbol which was ablaze with a holy light. The zombies reacted and started scrambling to get away from the holy aura eminating from Agnatha’s raised hand. One last blow from Levi’s sword fell the abomination turning away from him and he rushed to engage one of the two surrounding Tedro and Seraphina. Tedro hit with his staff, Seraphina launched arcane bolts, and Levi’s sword quickly toppled another before it could flee. Agnatha watched the one fleeing her to the east but it quiclky disappeared into the trees and was gone from sight. The last remaining one turned back towards the party to attack again after Seraphina’s bolts and Tedro’s arrows struck it and aggravated it beyond the control of the holy radiance. A few more solid blows from Levi’s sharp sword destroyed the creature. The party hastily cleared the bodies and wagon from the road and continued north a short way and set up camp for the night. They wanted to remain in the area in case the final remaining zombie came back to cause trouble for other travellers. Everyone should be happy to be back to the drugery of road travel after the eventful past few days.

Lesson learned

When the cleric decides to desecrate a tomb, the only proper response is to club them over the head and find a new party. Otherwise the party will find out rather quickly that mummy lords, vampire lords, arch lichs, or whatever, do not like to be disturbed by lowly breathers. Run fast, run far …. run away or you will be rolling a new character too.

I'm going on an adventure!

I guess I should back up a little before I begin.

My name is Fitzdale Sparkspring, but everyone just calls me Fitz. I was born and still live in the city of Silverymoon. My parents, Geto and Lumella, have been in Silverymoon for a little over a century now. They both work at the Vault of the Sages. Mother is a historian and works on sorting, filing, and translating the thousands and thousands of historical documents in the vast archives there. Father is a master craftsman who makes amazing mechanical locks and contraptions that serve as deterrents for anyone foolish enough to attempt to steal anything from the vault. Myself, well I suppose you could call me a curious tinker that is still trying to unravel the path that Gond wants me to pursue. I spent most of my youth helping mother and the other sages in the archives. I learned history, science, zoology, how to read and write several languages, and how to research any subjust that caught my fancy. My father spent evenings teaching me how to use his crafting tools, how to build wind-up toys, and the theories behind alchemy. Life was pretty mudane until recently.

Last winter my parents enrolled me in The Lady’s College, the renowned magic school here in Silverymoon, when I stumbled upon a scroll and was able to cast the spell without any training. They said it was far too dangerous for me not to have formal training with my knack for learning how things work. School was quite easy so I wound up having a lot of free time on my hands wating for the other students in my class to catch up. I must have caused a little too much mischief with the pranks I inflicted on the other students with all that free time. The teachers convinced a ‘fellow’, the term for a visiting post-graduate student, to become my mentor and take me on as an apprentice. I suspect this was only meant to keep me occupied between classes. A couple months later they asked me to stop attending classes. It seems my master, a stout dwarf named Magus Nesgim, had explained that I learned so quickly that the methodical teachings in the standard cirriculum would hold my progress back. Personally I think he is just lazy because all I have been doing the past month is running errands fetching ingredients from local farms and herbalist shops.

I think that is enough rambling about my past to get you caught up.

Yesterday Magus Nesgim sent me on yet another errand. This time, to fetch some Goldenseal root and Slippery elm at an herbalist shop in a nearby town called Eastbrook. This shop is known to stock products brought in by the elves from the forest to the north. You might think these to be rare mystical spell components for an enchantment or illusion, but they are only for making a tincture to soothe his sore throat after spending all day chanting spells.

Eastbrook is about 50 miles west of Silverymoon, going out through the Moongate. This is far beyond the relative safety of the city, so Magus Nesgim paid to have one of the city guards accompany me. Veck is a grizzled veteran of the guard, but he is really kind and gentle for a human. He must think I am just a child because he often hoists me up and carries me on his shoulders. He could be trying to give me a better view, or maybe its that we can travel faster with his long strides matching 3 of mine.
